  • Helping MOMS Act

Constituent request in support of the Helping MOMS Act – to increase access to lifesaving saving postpartum care.

As a constituent and someone who cares deeply about the health and wellbeing of pregnant and new moms and the babies they love, I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 3345, the Helping MOMS Act, bipartisan legislation introduced by Representatives Robin Kelly and Jamie Herrera Beutler. This legislation builds on the foundation of the American Rescue Plan by providing states with the option to permanently extend Medicaid coverage through the entire postpartum period of one year, a proven strategy for reducing preventable maternal deaths and long-term complications.

Currently, most states only provide Medicaid coverage for 60 days immediately following childbirth. However, many new moms experience one or more health complications within a year of giving birth. Notably, nearly one-third of complications that lead to maternal death occurs after 6 weeks – which is when many moms receive the last doctor’s appointment they will have until they become pregnant again. More moms need to be covered, and all moms need to stay covered – for at least one year postpartum. With more than half of new moms covered by Medicaid, the Helping MOMS Act could significantly improve these health outcomes. It will also lower healthcare costs by reducing long-term, sometimes life-long care for serious complications of pregnancy and childbirth that go undiagnosed and untreated. Plus, I’m sure you agree: Healthy moms and babies…priceless.

It is for these reasons that I urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 3345. To co-sponsor this legislation, please contact Anita Burgos in Representative Robin Kelly’s office at anita.burgos@mail.house.gov and Adriianna Lagorio in Representative Herrera Beutler’s office at adriianna.lagorio@mail.house.gov.

Thank you for your consideration of my request, on behalf of moms everywhere.
    Sincerely,

    (Your first and last name)

  • Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act

Constituent request in support of the Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act – to better support rural hospitals and doctors, and bridge gaps in maternal healthcare.

As a constituent and someone who cares deeply about the health and wellbeing of pregnant and new moms and the babies they love, I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor the Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act (S.4079/H.R.8383), introduced by Senators Hassan, Collins, Britt and Smith, and Representatives Kim, Kelly, Meuser and Schrier. This bipartisan bill aims to bridge the alarming gap in maternal healthcare and provide the workforce, training and equipment to meet patients' unique needs regardless of where they live.

Rural America is in the midst of a maternal mortality crisis, with women facing disproportionally high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity due to challenges in accessing the comprehensive, affordable, quality care that all moms deserve. With more than half of all rural counties in the U.S. lacking access to hospital-based obstetric services, significantly more needs to be done to support these moms, including better training and equipment for rural healthcare facilities to better deal with maternal health emergencies when they arise. The Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act would also create a pilot program to support regional networks of obstetric and maternal health care teams that can provide urgent teleconsultation to rural facilities.

It is for these reasons that I strongly urge you to co-sponsor the Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act. To co-sponsor this legislation, please contact Jasmine Masand in Senator Hassan's office at jasmine_masand@hassan.senate.gov, or Shine Lee in Congresswoman Kim's office at shine.lee@mail.house.gov.

Thank you for your consideration of my request, on behalf of moms everywhere.

    Sincerely,

    (Your first and last name)
